CRAIG WALSH NAMED GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT FOR THE GEORGIA TECH CLUB
Atlanta, Georgia. June, 2004

Craig Walsh has been named golf course superintendent for the new Georgia Tech Club now under construction in Alpharetta, GA. The Georgia Tech Club will feature a new Rees Jones’ golf course design. Final shaping and contouring of the land is now complete and grassing of the golf course is underway. The course is expected to open for play summer of 2005.

Walsh brings with him almost 10 years of experience, with the last three years spent as golf course superintendent of the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta. During his tenure at the club, he was instrumental in assisting and preparing for the Senior PGA’s Nationwide Championship as well as the GA Cup. Prior to joining the Golf Club of Georgia, Walsh served at some of the nation’s best golf courses, including Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD, and the Farm Golf Club in Dalton, GA.

A graduate of Mississippi State University in 1996 with a bachelor of science degree, Walsh focused in college on agronomy, golf, sports and management. Walsh is married to the former Jennifer Andrews and they have a four-year old son, Hayden, and a two-year old daughter, Alexis.

"We are very fortunate to have Craig Walsh join The Georgia Tech Club team," said Mark Hesemann, general manager of the project. "He brings to us invaluable expertise in regard to the conditioning and care of the finest golf courses in America, and he comes to us at a critical time in the progress of the construction of the course. With his supervision of the grow-in of the course, and Rees Jones' continued participation, I know we will see good results and have a wonderful golf course to play next spring."

The Georgia Tech Club consists of approximately 610 acres located in Atlanta’s northern quadrant, near Alpharetta in the heart of the GA-400 corridor, in Cherokee and Fulton counties. The Georgia Tech Club, which is being developed by University Clubs by Melrose, will feature the 18-hole Rees Jones championship golf course, a campus style clubhouse complex including a pro shop, dining area, club lounge and locker rooms.

In addition to the clubhouse, a Lifestyle Center will feature a spa, fitness, wellness center and a Swim Center. There will also be a Tennis Club designed by former U.S. Open and Wimbledon champion, Stan Smith.

Rees Jones received the 2004 Old Tom Morris Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). Rees Jones began his career with Robert Trent Jones, Inc., his father’s design firm. Jones’ design for the Golf Club at Briars Creek in South Carolina was named Best New Private Course 2003 by Golf Digest. In Georgia, Reynolds Plantation (Oconee Course), placed eighth on the list by Golf Digest of Best New Upscale Public Courses for 2002, and Ocean Forest Golf Club at Sea Island was Runner-up, Best New Private Course 1996. Ocean Forest hosted the Walker Cup in 2001.
